| The Stadium was on
the east of the acropolis on the skirts of Mt.
Panayir. It was 230 m. in length and 30 m wide and built for horse
racing. The entrance was on the west. There was a double row of columns at
the door where generally the victor's laurel was awarded.
The stands on the mountainside were carved into the rock of the slope. The stands on the other side were on top of vaulted galleries. The stadium was first built in the Hellenistic Period and restored in Nero's time (54-68 AD). |
